Idea Grants Awarded

Filed under: The James — The Blog @ 6:01 AM

The first batch of Pelotonia Idea Grants have been awarded to Ohio State cancer researchers. As the name suggests, the grants will fund 10 great/brilliant ideas that will help beat cancer.

Here's how we got great ideas back in the old days and...

“We will give $100,000 a year for two years to our scientists with the best ideas; it’s that simple,” said Mike Caligiuri, director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and chief executive officer of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute.

The money from these grants comes from the pot of money raised by Pelotonia riders, $4.5 million in 2009 and maybe twice this amount this year. A few weeks ago, we announced the first batch of Pelotonia Undergraduate Fellowships. Click here to read about them. We’ll continue to keep you posted on how the money you raise is spent.

Topics of the Pelotonia Idea Grants include: a focus on the early detection and prevention of pancreatic cancer; tests to determine the most effective therapies for triple-negative breast cancer; a look at how cancer develops and the role of heredity that could lead to new prevention and treatment strategies; the development of a new drug to fight breast cancer and leukemia.

Here's how we get them today - and save energy at the same time!

Here’s a list of the 10 teams of winners and their ideas. See if you can match the brief descriptions above with the technical titles below.
