Can You Commute … By Bike?

Filed under: Steve's Stuff — The Blog @ 6:01 AM

Have you ever commuted to work by bike?

If not … now’s your chance to give it a try. You may be surprised by how easy and fun it is.

As part of Bike Month, Consider Biking (a local nonprofit that promotes cycling) is sponsoring Bike To Work kickoff events on Monday, May 17. The schedule includes:

7:30 AM – Ohio State Gateway South: Mayor “Bikin’ Mike” Coleman will unveil additional cycling-friendly improvements for the city. The mayor has stated his goal is to make Columbus the country’s most bike-friendly city – and we’re going to hold him to his promise!

8 AM – The CEO Challenge begins, as the mayor and at least 30 CEOs from major local companies pedal their way down High Street to the Statehouse promote bike commuting and safe peddling. I will be there – if I can get up that early! Why are bike events always so darn early in the morning? I’m going to have to create The Annual Late Risers Bike Tour and Mid-Afternoon Brunch.

7:30 to 8:30 AM – There will be coffee, food, music and cycling displays on the Statehouse lawn. If you work down there – come on by.

More News: Consider Biking will also unveil the details of “2 by 2012” – a new program whose goal is to get more and more people to commute to work by bike of a semi-regular basis.

And speaking of the mayor, here’s the story of his first century during TOSRV. Now we have to get him to do his second century at Pelotonia on August 21. He rode last year, but “only” did about 50 miles. Come on, Mr. Mayor – it’s time for you to go the distance for Pelotonia.

Tomorrow I will write about the basics of bike commuting.  It’s really not that hard – and is actually a great way to start the day and relieve some stress on the way home from work.
